How To Take Your Makeup Boldly Into Fall

By Stephanie Hepburn, The Times-Picayune on August 30, 2013 at 1:02 AM

Fall may be associated with the earthtone colors of the harvest and the turning of leaves, but fall makeup is quite the opposite: Bold is in. We’re talking teal and indigo eyes, shimmering orange cheeks and black lips. Of course, because each color is a statement, you won’t want to wear them all at once.

Mouthing off

Gone are the days when an almost black lip was associated with alternative fashion style, but pulling off the look still intimidates many. The solution, says makeup artist Robert Hudson, is to go with a sheer black like the Janiberry Lipstick by Wallett Cosmetics. Use a lip brush to apply, and skip the liner. The lipstick is designed to hydrate and provide long-term color. “For more depth, you can outline and fill in the lip with the Wallett lip pencil in Delice ($15),” Hudson says. “It has the same base color as the lipstick and will blend easily. This type of lip is a statement on its own, so don’t overpower it with too dark of an eye or too much blush.” Janiberry Lipstick, Wallett Cosmetics $19 by appointment at Robert Hudson Makeup Studio, 8206 Maple St., 504.473.8167

Blue-green with envy

Teal shadow is a must-have. Our favorite is the Single Eye Shadow in Tropic by Nars, which features a matte teal with silver particles. The shadow is designed to stay on, and will look as bold at the end of the night as it does at the beginning. It is crease-resistant and smudges well (ideal for blending into other shadows). For less intensity, lightly brush on the eyelid. For a more dramatic look, pat on the shadow with a brush, blending it up to the bottom of the brow bone. It pairs well with a neutral lip. Blushing, but not shy

A bit of blush helps to brighten your skin once the summer sun has faded. Blushes with hints of orange offer a fresh pop of color that can go with any makeup look, from daytime neutral to nighttime bold. Who’s Your Poppy is a highly pigmented orange/peachy-pink shade with a golden shimmer that goes with any skin tone. This moisturizing blush gives sheer and luminous color that makes the skin look rejuvenated, even after a long day at the office. Layer it for more intensity. Full Bloom Ultra Flush Blush in Who’s Your Poppy, Too Faced Cosmetics $21 at About Face of Mandeville, 3441 Causeway Blvd., Mandeville, 985.727.1887

The retro cat-eye look is still in full force, but added to the mix for fall is the cat-eye liner in a bold hue such as indigo or teal. Makeup artist Brandy Gomez-Duplessis loves the Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Indigo by Stila Cosmetics. The striking rich-blue hue is easy to apply using its felt tip. “The felt tip helps to give the precise cat-eye,” Gomez-Duplessis says. “The great thing about this item is that it goes on smoothly, no skipping or pulling.” During the day, use it with a bare or neutral eyelid. At night, pair it with an equally bold glittery shadow. Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Indigo, Stila Cosmetics $20 at Earthsavers

Sweat-Proof Makeup On 2012 Olympics Athlete Lolo Jones

With the 2012 Olympics in London coming up in August, I’m sure us beauty lovers would like to know how their favorite female athletes will maintain their beauty. The key word in the hot summer months is “sweat proof” and “humidity resistant”. I had the pleasure of doing makeup & hair on the stunning Lolo Jones for Redbull “Red Bulletin” Magazine on a very hot day in Baton Rouge, La. I brought tons of makeup with me because I didn’t have the details for the shoot (indoor or outdoor). I selected products that will be perfect for what Lolo will experience when she runs the 100m hurdles this summer. I needed her face makeup to be sweat proof, so I used makeup from Hourglass Cosmetics. I love Hourglass cosmetics products for this reason, it’s great for outdoor assignments. So I make sure I always have it in my makeup kit.

I prepped Lolo with Hourglass Cosmetics Veil Mineral Primer and used Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation in Beige. On her eyes I selected an neutral brown shimmer eye shadows from Inglot cosmetics and eye liner and mascara from L’OREAL Paris. To stay put in all the humidity, I used L’OREAL Paris HIP Studio Secrets Cream Eyeliner in Black and Voluminious Waterproof Mascara in Carbon Black. On Lolo’s cheeks, I wanted her to maintain her youthful and effortless look so I selected  a soft shade of pink blush from MAC cosmetics called Well Dressed and on her lips I used Victoria Secret Beauty Rush lip gloss called Slice of Heaven. To keep Lolo’s skin glowing I pick Stila cosmetics All-over shimmer powder in Kitten.

To finish her look off, on Lolo’s hair, I used the best of the best, L’OREAL Paris Elnett Satin hairspray. I also mixed a few shades of MAC cosmetics foundation to use on her body then tap a little of Stila cosmetics All-over shimmer powder in Kitten for that perfect glow. So now you know the secret to the beautiful Lolo Jones.

Fun Sultry Photo Shoot in Soho

I had the pleasure of working with Jade of Jades today, a talented and gorgeous young woman who sings & act. She has done Broadway shows and sing background with music artist Solange Knowles. Jade is working on new pictures and asked if I could help her out. Nyla, the hairstylist did a great job with Jade’s hair, luv the fishtail.
Jade had a few different looks that she wanted me to create but because I was having a vertigo attack all day I couldn’t be as creative as I would have normally. But with a pretty canvas to work on I could have painted her with my eyes close.
My makeup of choice on this shoot was: Inglot, Stila, OCC, and L’OREAL Paris.

Glam Makeup Looks For The Ladies of MTV Hip Hop POV

Last night of the season for MTV Hip Hop POV, so I decided to have fun with the ladies; Devi Dev, Amanda Seales, and Sowmya Krishnamurthy makeup tonight. I knew the makeup on tonight show had to be glamxurious. I relish every Monday because I was able to paint three beautiful canvas with different makeup looks.
Sowmya and I had an inside joke that she’s the cousin of the Kardashian family. Because I’ve worked with the Kardashian family in New Orleans, working with Sowmya perfect canvas was like working with the Kardashians. Amanda, was my golden palette that I was able to play with bold color eyeliner on her.  My two favorite to use on Amanda were L’OREAL Paris Hip Chrome liner in Violet Volt and Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes in Turquoise. We had a connection the first day, maybe it’s an island girl thing. Amanda allowed me to play with fun and sometimes sultry makeup looks. With baby girl, Devi Dev, I always kept her lips in soft baby pink, her signature color. Dev luved Stila cosmetics long wear liquid lip color in Petal top with Victoria Secret Beauty Rush lip gloss in Slice of Heaven. Dev, a sweetheart would come in early in we would just have great conversation so I got to learn her personality.
Looking forward to the fall season to play with the ladies makeup again. I must admit Devi Dev, Amanda, and Sowmya are the hottest looking TV host on television and not just on MTV.
Using L’OREAL Paris Infallible LeRouge in Ravishing Red on Sowmya
Using  Royal & Langnickel Revolution blush brush to apply Stila Cosmetics Custom Color Blush in Pink…my all time favorite

Barbie Loves Stila Cosmetics

One of the most popular cult makeup lines ever, MAC Cosmetics introduced their Barbie collection in 2007. It was very successful generating $9 million dollars in retail sales. The limited edition MAC x Barbie doll was just as fabulous as any trendy girl and came with a makeup case and a glam modern look. She retailed at $239.99. Don’t get me wrong, I am a makeup addict…I love being a makeup artist but this is one MAC item I couldn’t image buying.

Now, Stila Cosmetics is now joining in on the Barbie fad. Stila Cosmetics has teamed up with America’s Beauty, Barbie for a limited edition collection of cosmetics that will be introduced Spring 2009. Stila is so honored and thrilled to be the official prestige makeup sponsor for Barbie in 2009. The partnership between Barbie and Stila is ideal as both brands represent the perfect blend of sophistication, fun and innovation. Stila will produce the collection and will also be a backstage beauty makeup sponsor for Mattel’s first Barbie runway show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in February. Also in February, the collaboration kicks off with limited edition Barbie™ Loves Stila offerings that will launch just in time for Barbie’s anniversary celebrations. The collection will be available at Sephora’s 5th Avenue store in New York, the international Sephora locations and at Sephora.com only. The four Barbie™ Loves Stila beauty cans collection will feature four Decades of Beauty at $40.00 and inside a look booklet describing the beauty and fashion wardrobes for each doll. In 2009, it’s still a Barbie world, and deep down we’re all Barbie girls.
