A lot of people in the Beauty Industry told me if I keep sharing on social media that I have Lupus that I would lose a lot of work. But how can I hide what I’m battling everyday. It’s my life, it’s what I’m going through everyday. So why should I hide it because it makes my peers uncomfortable and with many not really understand what Lupus is I have to educate and help bring awareness. For so long, I kept it hidden and I finally decided that I want to speak out, that I should use my platform to help bring awareness to Lupus. So I selected to share my story with Caribbean Posh magazine readers and hopefully my story can help someone who’s battling some form of an auto-immune disease.

In 2000-2005, I knew something was going on with my body. All of my doctors kept telling me that I was just stressed because of my career, working with celebrities and traveling around the world. So, I believed them because what did I know, I’m just a makeup artist. But in August 2005, as I stepped inside the elevator at New Orleans City Hall. I received a call from my new doctor and she said, “I need to see you right away because your numbers were elevated and I’m very concerned”. I’m never going to forget that day and that call. I went in to see my doctor, she told me she wanted to do more testing on me but she was afraid that I had Lupus. I knew what it was because my mother twin sister died from Lupus complications very fast after being diagnosed. Fast forward, Hurricane Katrina happen, that I put that news far far away. I didn’t have time to deal with that. So, I went through life in extreme pain and was always exhausted as I rebuild my life. In 2014, I’m now living in Connecticut and I couldn’t tolerate what was going on with me anymore. This superwoman couldn’t bare being miserable so I went to see a doctor. After the first blood work came back she immediately said you have Lupus and I’m going to refer you to a Rheumatologist.

img_6337

Fast forward again, I learned that moving up North to an extreme cold climate it trigger a flare up that refuse to go away. I’ve had so many scary challenges from an enlarged heart, kidney problems, blood clotting, stomach problems due to the prednisone, blurry vision, lost my sense of smell and taste and now pulmonary challenges that I’m relocating back to New Orleans for a few months during the winter so that my lungs can heal and so I don’t have to use my breathing machine 2x’s a day.

In 2019, I plan to work hard at bringing awareness to Lupus. Yeah, a lot of beauty brands and companies have released me from working with them but they can’t stop me from doing makeup. I’m going to always be a talented makeup artist and they can’t take that away. No, I don’t look sick but know that living with Lupus is a lonely disease and it’s a disease that you have to be a fighter because it’s a horrible disease. The things your body goes through is hard and doctors give us meds that’s not the right meds, it’s something to help with a similar symptoms.

I launched a makeup line in 2017 called Entitled Beauty Cosmetics that keeps me busy along with loyal clients and production companies. Ladies, if you feel that something is going on with your body, something is. Fight until you find a doctor that will listen to you. If you have to lose, family, friends and co-workers it’s ok, don’t let them tell you that nothing is wrong with you. Cuz if your body is going through something you need to be stress free, so take a break from people who bring stress to your life. Cuz it’s the last thing you need.

As a makeup artist living with lupus, I often turn to mineral makeup. My must-have items include color correctors to help with discoloration and hyper-pigmentation; a primer with a brightener to bring radiance to my dull skin; mineral mascara, which is good for sensitive eyes; and foundation and moisturizer that’s loaded with SPF. My focus is always finding great skin-care products that will not cause inflammation of the skin.

Here are 8 beauty items that as a Lupus Warrior I can wear on my skin and it doesn’t trigger anything.

1. FIRST AID BEAUTY Hello Fab Coconut Micellar Makeup Melter
2. HOURGLASS Veil Mineral Primer
3. LAURA MERCIER Mineral Powder
4. ALGENIST Splash Hydrating Setting Mist
5. TARTE Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara
6. STILA Stay All Day Foundation + Concealer
7. ENTITLED BEAUTY Spotlight Highlighters
8. CAUDALIE Vinoperfect Radiance Serum

New Orleans Makeup Artist Love Yankee Candles During The Christmas Holidays At Her Connecticut Home

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas…well smell like Christmas, I should say. During the year I love to buy candles from Yankee Candles and for the Christmas holiday I really enjoy my home to smell like a Christmas tree. My favorite Yankee Candle this season is “Balsam & Cedar” candle and it’s a 22oz in size.

The fragrances are Balsam, aromatic cedar wood and juniper berry blend together in a fresh forest scent. And the fragrance notes are; Top: Crisp Citrus, Herbs, Red Berry
Mid: Pine Balsam, Cedar, Sandalwood
Base: Vanilla, Warm Amber, Musk
Top note is the initial impression of the fragrance, middle note is the main body of the scent and base is its final impression.  This candle will give you about (110-150 hours burn time) which is about 14-19 days of amazing aroma in the your home. This is why I love buying Yankee Candles because I feel like I get a lot of days and normally candles don’t last that long.

img_6056-2

As you know I lost the sense of smell due to my Lupus. But I recently got it back so I went ham at their store and treated myself to some goodies. I love candles its definitely a treat for the house. Like on non holidays I pick candles that represent my mood and energy.

How about you do you love Yankee Candles and do you have a favorite candle from Yankee Candles that you like?

I Had A Fantastic Thanksgiving In Connecticut With My Family How About You

img_5366Happy Thanksgiving To My Social Media Family! I hope everyone had a fabulous day with your loved ones. I was blessed to have everyone home, mama got her wish and was able to love on them all day.

I started cooking at 10am and by 3pm dinner was served. This year I did something a little different. I figure the kids were old enough to now learn the recipes. I invited them into my kitchen to assist me with preparing the dishes for Thanksgiving.

After dinner and sitting around the table enjoying each other we always get into great conversation about everything. We go deep, I really should tape us for a podcast or something.

So what was your highlight for Thanksgiving? Was it the family time, the food, the mini concerts.

L’OREAL Paris vs. Hourglass Cosmetics Illuminating Primer Dupe With Celebrity Makeup Artist and Beauty Expert

Primers are used for different things. Can L’OREAL Paris dupe the Hourglass prestige product? Do they do the same thing? I was a L’OREAL Paris Pro Makeup Artist for 9 years and I wore L’OREAL Paris makeup everyday. I was always a fan of drugstore makeup because I know the beauty industry secrets.

So Beauty Expert/Actor Johnny Luoma and I got together to make you a fun video to see which beauty products we like the best. So let’s see which one of the products win, drugstore or prestige. What do you think?

So about my breathing as you know I have Lupus so my lungs were giving me a hard time talking and breathing but I pushed through and completed the video while having a great time doing what I love, talking about makeup.

WorkParty Tour Stopped In New York And We Had A Blast

My Boss Babe, Ilse McDonnell and I from Live, Learn and Luxe It was invited to attend a fun work party that we couldn’t pass up. We both try to attend events where positive women are hosting and sharing tips on how we could better our brand.

Todays event is taking place in New York, it’s a part of the third WorkParty Tour stop hosted by Jaclyn Johnson. Jaclyn has a weekly podcast powered by Create Cultivate and presented by Microsoft 365. The event was held at WeWork Bryant Park and bubbly was served from Chandon and Crispin Cider.

The panel consists of Rebecca Minkoff, Christine Barbaric, Michelle Lee and Olivia Pérez. The ladies shared with us what it’s like to be a BOSS and how they got their seat at the table. One of my favorite quotes came from the awesome Rebecca Minkoff. She said to us entrepreneurs, “To be an entrepreneur in 2018, you have to multi-task like a bitch.”

Microsoft had an interactive booth where we took a 6 question quiz. I was quoted as The Heart and the other two team member you could have been called was The Influencer and The Collaborator.

At the end of the evening, 16 Boss Babes won a Microsoft Surface Pro and I was one of the lucky winners. So if a WorkParty Tour make a stop in your city be sure to attend.

HGTV Magazine Block Party In New York

img_9558Bloggers, if I can share with you anything it’s push yourself everyday if you want to your blog to be successful. I’ve been there with abandoning my blog because of everyday life just took precedence. When I was named “15 Awesome People To Follow During The Golden Globe” by AOL that really got me going. When I changed over to WordPress in 2015 I lost my followers and how to do my SEO that has been so discouraging. But at yesterday HGTV Magazine Block Party the panel got me fired up in a good way. I’m on the right track with my blog because it’s authentic, my blog is about me my life as a Celebrity Makeup Artist and Beauty Expert. The tips and advice that was given by the panel really helped a lot. I just have to have someone look at my SEO because I didn’t correctly do it so I’m losing money and not getting the bookings that I should be.

img_9566

Ilse and I met up at Grand Central before taking a cab over. It was a rainy day but we didn’t want to miss this event for anything so we both commuted and this rain storm because we wanted to get some blogging feeding. On our way over we talked about the great lineup and who we looked forward to hearing their stories. Can I just say, we were not disappointed.

At 12:50 PM Sarah Patterson, the Editor In Chief of HGTV Magazine welcomed the invited guest.
