New Orleans Celebrity Makeup Artist Talk Living With Lupus With Caribbean Posh Magazined

A lot of people in the Beauty Industry told me if I keep sharing on social media that I have Lupus that I would lose a lot of work. But how can I hide what I’m battling everyday. It’s my life, it’s what I’m going through everyday. So why should I hide it because it makes my peers uncomfortable and with many not really understand what Lupus is I have to educate and help bring awareness. For so long, I kept it hidden and I finally decided that I want to speak out, that I should use my platform to help bring awareness to Lupus. So I selected to share my story with Caribbean Posh magazine readers and hopefully my story can help someone who’s battling some form of an auto-immune disease.

In 2000-2005, I knew something was going on with my body. All of my doctors kept telling me that I was just stressed because of my career, working with celebrities and traveling around the world. So, I believed them because what did I know, I’m just a makeup artist. But in August 2005, as I stepped inside the elevator at New Orleans City Hall. I received a call from my new doctor and she said, “I need to see you right away because your numbers were elevated and I’m very concerned”. I’m never going to forget that day and that call. I went in to see my doctor, she told me she wanted to do more testing on me but she was afraid that I had Lupus. I knew what it was because my mother twin sister died from Lupus complications very fast after being diagnosed. Fast forward, Hurricane Katrina happen, that I put that news far far away. I didn’t have time to deal with that. So, I went through life in extreme pain and was always exhausted as I rebuild my life. In 2014, I’m now living in Connecticut and I couldn’t tolerate what was going on with me anymore. This superwoman couldn’t bare being miserable so I went to see a doctor. After the first blood work came back she immediately said you have Lupus and I’m going to refer you to a Rheumatologist.

img_6337

Fast forward again, I learned that moving up North to an extreme cold climate it trigger a flare up that refuse to go away. I’ve had so many scary challenges from an enlarged heart, kidney problems, blood clotting, stomach problems due to the prednisone, blurry vision, lost my sense of smell and taste and now pulmonary challenges that I’m relocating back to New Orleans for a few months during the winter so that my lungs can heal and so I don’t have to use my breathing machine 2x’s a day.

In 2019, I plan to work hard at bringing awareness to Lupus. Yeah, a lot of beauty brands and companies have released me from working with them but they can’t stop me from doing makeup. I’m going to always be a talented makeup artist and they can’t take that away. No, I don’t look sick but know that living with Lupus is a lonely disease and it’s a disease that you have to be a fighter because it’s a horrible disease. The things your body goes through is hard and doctors give us meds that’s not the right meds, it’s something to help with a similar symptoms.

I launched a makeup line in 2017 called Entitled Beauty Cosmetics that keeps me busy along with loyal clients and production companies. Ladies, if you feel that something is going on with your body, something is. Fight until you find a doctor that will listen to you. If you have to lose, family, friends and co-workers it’s ok, don’t let them tell you that nothing is wrong with you. Cuz if your body is going through something you need to be stress free, so take a break from people who bring stress to your life. Cuz it’s the last thing you need.

As a makeup artist living with lupus, I often turn to mineral makeup. My must-have items include color correctors to help with discoloration and hyper-pigmentation; a primer with a brightener to bring radiance to my dull skin; mineral mascara, which is good for sensitive eyes; and foundation and moisturizer that’s loaded with SPF. My focus is always finding great skin-care products that will not cause inflammation of the skin.

Here are 8 beauty items that as a Lupus Warrior I can wear on my skin and it doesn’t trigger anything.

1. FIRST AID BEAUTY Hello Fab Coconut Micellar Makeup Melter
2. HOURGLASS Veil Mineral Primer
3. LAURA MERCIER Mineral Powder
4. ALGENIST Splash Hydrating Setting Mist
5. TARTE Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara
6. STILA Stay All Day Foundation + Concealer
7. ENTITLED BEAUTY Spotlight Highlighters
8. CAUDALIE Vinoperfect Radiance Serum

Makeup, Food, Drinks And Sports, A Perfect Sunday To Watch The Saints Game

img_4160

Who Dat, Who Dat, Who Dat say Dey Gon Beat Dem Saints?

Today is game day and the New Orleans Saints is playing that’s all I know. I get to spend day 2 with my bride Nancy from yesterday. Nancy and Jim are hosting a Saints Game party at their home. I arrived a few hours earlier to get Nancy glamxurious before her guests arrived. My little sister was my plus 1 for the day. So I was able to spend time with Nancy and my sister while enjoying great food and drinks.

I definitely miss this lifestyle in New Orleans. When I’m back in New Orleans I noticed I’m not as sick. I have my Lupus symptoms but I find them to be mild. But when I’m in Connecticut my body does not allow me to be outdoors for a long period of time. My body shuts down real fast and I spend a lot of my days indoors, it’s very lonely. So I’m taking advantage of the beautiful weather, the socializing and all the great food and drinks. I’m going to pay for it when I get back but you know what its’ so worth it. I will be at home having my Lupus Flare, looking at pics and thinking about the great time I had.

You know this girl have to have her champagne

Nancy, Star and myself are wearing Entitled Beauty cosmetics, it’s a luxurious mineral makeup line that’s sold only online. I will leave the colors everyone is wearing below.

Feeling Like A Pink Lady In My Entitled Beauty Makeup

img_2722Hey Girl Hey…Today I’m giving you a Pink Lady vibe with my Entitled Beauty makeup look. Hanging out in the Boogie Down Bronx feeling fly, You Like?

Can you believe that all this fabulousness is mineral makeup. When I finally decided that I was going to do a makeup line, I knew that it had to be a mineral line because of my health issues with Lupus. My autoimmune is so weak that I have to be very careful about the makeup I put on my skin. And I wanted women to wear healthy makeup as well if they are going to be wearing Entitled Beauty Cosmetics. With mineral makeup it’s usually very neutral and boring and since there is nothing boring about me I wanted the makeup to be highly pigmented and long wearing.

So let me tell you what I’m wearing today.

Entitled Beauty Cosmetics:

  • Eyes “Broke A$$” Social Eyeshadow launching Nov 14th online
  • Cheeks “Resting Bitch Face” Spotlight Highlighter
  • Lips “Venice” All Nighter Liquid Lipstick + “Sassy” Glamxurious Lipgloss

Getting Maite Perroni Makeup Ready For Proactiv Back To School Event

img_6443When you have an early morning call time in New York for 6am and your coming from Connecticut it means your getting up at 4am. Then if your client is the beautiful Maite Perroni, you have to go in looking fabulous with hair and makeup. What I love about working with this amazing woman is her energy and she loves for her glam squad to look just as good as she does. By 4:30am my hair is slaying and my face is beat. Now off to New York City I go to glam up my girl.

I got to Maite hotel at 5:45am, it’s so quiet so you know what I did, I had a photo shoot in the hotel. So let the photo shoot start because I only have 15 mins so I had to strike a pose.

It was so good to see my girl Maite. I feel like we are in the beginning stage of a friendship.

img_8659
Both Maite Perroni and I wearing Anastasia Liquid Lipstick from Entitled Beauty

I always enjoy talking with her as well as getting her makeup ready for her events. Upon entering her hotel room, Maite gave me a long hug. I couldn’t wait to catch up with her to see what all new things she’s working on that she has not shared with her loyal fans. Then I was able to share with her all the new things I’m working on including me launching Entitled Beauty Cosmetics back in November. I knew she was going to love it because she loves makeup just as much as I do. And she’s a business woman so she would understand all my ideas and what I’m trying to do with the brand. As we were talking we both realized that we are flirting with spending time in Los Angeles around the same time.

img_8663So why was I in New York doing Maite’s makeup? As many of you know that she’s one of the spokespersons for Proactiv. And Proactiv was having a big event called Proactiv Journey for Back To School. Proactiv along with the fabulous team from Lippie Taylor agency put on a great event for kids returning to school. They set them up for success by providing them with a starter backpack of school supplies ranging from; pencil pouches, 12-pack of pencils, a pack of note cards, highlighters, binders, packs of paper, folders, and so much more. The best items that was added to the backpacks were the Proactiv Limited Edition Gift Bundle that included the 3-piece system featuring Adapalene, their most advanced system to date; Deep Cleansing Face Wash, Daily Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30, and Adapalene Gel 0.1%

So now the kids can treat their skin to retinoid, without a prescription. The great thing about the 3 piece system is that it includes moisture and sun protection, from what I hear it’s highly recommended with the use of retinoids.

It was an elaborate event that catered to all ages from kids, teens and adults. At the candy station is were you could find me when I wasn’t touching up Maite’s makeup.

I am so here for the Limited Edition Hello Kitty brush kit. You can find this item at your local Ulta Beauty store very soon. Check with your local store or follow Proactiv on Instagram so you can hear the launch date. It will make for a great holiday gift so make sure you pick one up before they run out. I wasn’t gifted with the brush kit but I did receive the 3-piece system and I am so honored for it. Being a celebrity makeup artist living with lupus, I’m always worried about my skin and how it looks. I wear a full face of makeup everyday because I hate the texture of my skin. I have oily skin with large pores and moles on my face. So, I can’t wait to see if my skin texture change in 3 months. Adult acne is a thing and I see so many of my clients suffering with it more then when they were a teenager. Proactiv is not just for teens, us adults we need some Proactiv love also.

Here are the makeup items from my makeup line Entitled Beauty Cosmetics I used on Maite. We are both rockin the same lip color, cuz we FLY! By 12 noon it was a wrap!

Spotlight Highlighter: Resting Bitch Face on her cheeks

When Did You Know That You Were Going To Be An Entrepreneur?

img_1653As Nicki Minaj would say, I Been On…In 2007, I was interviewed by Strive Magazine on rebuilding my brand in a new city after losing my home and 3 makeup studios in New Orleans. Being an entrepreneur has always been my thing. Besides being a Celebrity & Entertainment Makeup Artist, I am also the Co-Founder of Entitled Beauty a luxury mineral makeup line, and I’m the Founder of Beauty Blueprint, where I teach aspiring makeup artists/ hair stylists the business side of the industry and how to elevate them to work in their field. Being on social media with 47,400 followers on Instagram, I’m also being called an Influencer.

A Boss is something I’ve always been and I have never let my health (Lupus) stop me. Using words like “I Can’t & I Don’t Know How” is not allowed in my home and I don’t have sympathy for someone who cries about a headache or upset stomach. Being an entrepreneur is only for hard working individuals. I still have a few more things under my belt. With one being joining the committee for the first ever Danbury Fashion Week here in Connecticut, so I’m on the board and of course I’m handling Hair & Makeup, and A Blogger Kick Off Party. This is taking place July 24-29th and I’m so proud of it.

Can’t Stop One Stop, my old boss Diddy taught me that…oh peep the hair in 07 💇🏾‍♀️💜

Thanks Sam for putting me in your magazine ❤️

So my question to you is, when did you know that you were going to be an Entrepreneur?
