TRICKS OF THE TRADE: Curling Your Eyelashes

written by Makeup Artist Brandy Gomez-Duplessis

I think I may be one of the few Professional Makeup Artists who do not use an eyelash curler. For me, I have tried so many eye lash curlers in the past and I had pinched my eyes lids and bent my lashes that I would not dare try to use it on some else. So, I had to learn another way to really get the lashes to curl when applying mascara.

Tweezerman, is the only brand that I buy for my tweezers. Well, they recently came out with a new rose-gold Pro-Curl Curler. It’s designed for people like me, its pinch proof, ergonomically crafted and the contoured curler is designed to fit all eye shapes. It has a thick round silicone pad to give the ultimate leverage for the best curl. It also comes with 3 replacement pads but you must replace your curler pad after three months and curler between 6-9 month.

Tips & Tricks

With eye opened wide and pad positioned at the base of lash-line hold handles firmly and gently squeeze.

Hold a few seconds, open curler completely and gently release lashes.

Repeat, by moving all the way up to lash tips to create a more dramatically sweeping curve.

Apply mascara and follow up with Tweezerman eyelashcomb for an even more flawless, clump-free curl.

Now you are on your way to creating your favorite eye-opening, runway effects, sexier sweep and a more defined look.

BEHIND THE BEAUTY: Derek Lam’s Undone French Twist

written by Brandy Gomez-Duplessis

Undone French twists equal ooh lala femininity.

I really loved the hairstyle from Derek Lam’s Fall 09 Fashion Show. His models skipped down the runway wearing a really easy updo that can go from day to night. You would only need a finishing mist and a bow. At the fashion show, Lam’s models wore a satin bow, but crystal barrettes, flowers, and even the blue bird that Carrie Bradshaw wore in Sex And The City would be perfect.

To get the look:

*Blow hair out straight. Add body by setting with big Velcro rollers for 10 minutes.

*Pull hair back and twist it up into a loose twist.

*Pull out a section in the front so that it frames your face, which is what makes this style fluid. Use a Finishing Mist for hold.

*Clip your choice of accessory on the side and…voila!

Making The Band Drama

Ok WTF…Chris Brown #2

Q…is not going to make it in the industry. He has to many personal problems, he’s hot headed and he’s not mature enough. I am so glad Dawn stood up to him, gave him real talk and put him in his place. I don’t know if she got in his head but I am glad she was honest in fair about the fight. She didn’t take sides because she is dating him.

What a lot of people don’t understand is the entertainment industry is hard to be in. Yes, it looks great on tv but it is the hardest thing. Nobody never teaches these young kids how money works in the industry. Money is never what you think it is going to be. Then if you come from broken families and you make it everybody is at you begging for money not understanding that you don’t get your money the same day, the next day, and/or the next week sometimes. A lot of time the people that make it in the industry come from low-income families…keepin it real. Their family never get them an attorney they pimp there kids out to the labels and they get screwed. This is what’s happening to these band group. I love Diddy but he know these families will not go up against him in his lawyers so they just sign those contracts without reading them. Then the families start quitting their jobs, and thinking their kids will now take care of them. It’s sad because it happens all the time. This is why Q is stressin and can’t enjoy where GOD and his talent has placed him. Honestly, his mom should not have quit her job so fast. She should not place this stress on her child, she’s not allowing him to enjoy his passion and it’s not fair. He should be able to save the little money he will make when he does shows so when it slow down he will have something in his pocket.

Let me give you a personal example on how you get paid in the entertainment industry…I did the VH-1 Superbowl Bash in Tampa last month with The Fall Out Boys, Lifehouse and Rihanna. My paperwork still has not gotten process so my check is not in the mail yet! I know that for a fact because MTV called me today that they need me to resend them again for the 4th time. Now paperwork was done weeks before I left to go out to Tampa but they are still processing it. This is what happens when working with celebs and tv gigs. Payments take 30-90 days so if you don’t either have steady work or don’t know how to handle your money you will not make it in the industry. So you have to learn how to budget your money and pay your bills first. Now, if you have family in people coming at you they need money and you tell then you don’t have it of course they think you are telling them a lie. They keep coming at you with sad stories with hopes you would give in. But you can’t bring that stress with you on the next gig in this is what Q is doing. But this is the entertainment business. It’s not always GLAM. I see nothing has changed at Bad Boys Entertainment. I use to work for 4 years with them in 2 years with Arista and money was always late coming in. now with the recession…So, I understand what they are feelin. That is why I got out of the music industry. Let me tell you at first it was GLAM before the internet…If you worked in the industry way back then money was throwin around, people use to pay you for anything, I even had my own car to pick me up and take me around daily, I would just sign a car voucher…sweet right. When the internet came and got popular money starting getting tight in the industry. They never showed it on tv and that’s what you don’t see so going into the industry now you think it’s going to be like what you remember seeing.

Willie said it best last week on the show…they ain’t making it like people think. Yeah they are on tv and in the studio and staying in a great crib but their bank account don’t reflect it.

I just hope somebody please give Q a loan so he can give his mama some money. If not he is going to kill somebody because of the stress in pressure. Once again, he was the last person people think would behave that way.

Maybelline Lash Stiletto

written by Brandy Gomez-Duplessis

I finally purchased Maybelline Lash Stiletto, their new ultimate length mascara. I have been seeing the provocative ad campaign for the mascara and love the name..Lash Stiletto. So, I figure what not try it out.

What’s the secret…the grip and extended brush, the elastic formula stretch lashes to the extreme.

I did find the mascara to give the lashes some length but not volume. Just like the ad says, it does for the lashes what stilettos do for legs. Now, I am not sure if it’s the Pro-Vitamin B-5 formula conditioner but I like that it really does give that sexy black patent shine.

Checkin In

I checked into the W hotel at 8:01 pm. I am not really tired but just feeling blah. At the airport I purchased $46.81 worth of magazines to read on the plane and finishing reading the rest tonight.

I feel mentally drain I have so much to do back home that I don’t feel creative. I was hoping to have packed up the studio before leaving so I could have closed that chapter but didn’t happen. Celebrity hair stylist Ted Gibson reached out to me so I need to email him tonight. I have to relax and surround myself around things I love so I can get my creative juice flowin. I need to write at least two articles tonight for fashion indie so I can have a head start.

This week is Shontell BDay so I know I will be flying home to celebrate with baby girl.

Ok, let me go getting late and I need to unpack, order food, take a shower in snuggle in this big bed. I brought some candles with me, I do that a lot when I travel I like bringing candles and air freshners. The W hotel is nice so I never have to worry about it smelling.

Night…

CP 3 after party feedback

I had to workearlier that day so I was a little late meeting up with Miss Sassy at her house- 30 mins late give or take. As usual, acting like I am homeless I had to finish getting ready in the car. We make it to the game just in time to get a drink and get our seat. This is my second time attending a game like an average person. The first time Miss Sassy and I came to the Hornets game we were very late and we stayed for 20 mins so I don’t really count that as a full game. Miss Sassy is a season ticket holder, she loves all this sports stuff and I could care less about sports and/or ball players. I think if a lot of women really know the truth about the things they say in do I think less women would be excited about trying to trap or hook up with them.

Anyway, met a lot of new friends where we were sitting. Miss Sassy has really good seats so I was able to see the game but not really understanding everything. To much shit was going on, (shit flying in the air, people running around, the game going on, trying to people watch). Now the icing on the cake was…”Jason The Kidd” he was playing that night. He’s my buddy…I met him last year when I worked All-Star. So, I was excited about seeing him. Miss Sassy was embarrassed cuz I kept cheering for Jason. I think I was his only fan where we were sitting. At halftime went to go see Carlyn at bar 119, she looked so cute. Now you know what was kinda cool..the club thing after the game. It was cute kinda like a sports club lounge setting. We had to go down there because a friend of mine who works for the Hornets wanted me to meet him there to get the invite to attend the after party.

On our way out we run into Poochie… Well I call him Poochie…Derwin (Maron) from the tv show “The Game”. He was with his boy (Kobe or Colby). They were headin to the party as well.

The party set up outside was typical for press pics and red carpet events. Drinks was flowin all night and food served for an hour or two. CJ made sure that this time he put his number in my phone. Since we both are on the road a lot we never have time to hangout so we promise to do better this year. It was suppose to be a private party but the turnout looked like it was open to the public. Saw some peeps that I haven’t seen it a minute. Saw a lot of people that play the game “they don’t know you” cuz they got a little job workin with the hornets or Chris. That group makes me laugh…maybe this year I should start coming home acting like I’m the shit. I work in attend major A-list gigs I even go to their homes. Shit I was hand selected by Oprah to be the makeup artist for her tour and I never play those silly games with people. I had an ok time it wasn’t a hollywood studded party but I got to hang out with friends so that’s always cool.

I made a mistake in spoke to Tyson Chandler at the party and I forgot the rule…shit, how did I mess up. Miss Sassy said his wife gave me a nasty look but it was just a simple hi, how you been. Nothing more nothing less to the gesture. But this is why I don’t like to speak to male clients that I work with for that reason.

Jamielynn looked amazing with her cute mini pink dress. Love her haircut more with the front growing out. Was able to meet Carlos who is going to make me a custom pink stiletto with some bling. Carlos has his event in April. Will tell you more about it as the date gets closer. He’s a cutie.

We hung out with sexy can I “Ray J” and “Tigger” for awhile. Ray J got occupied by my girl Jakki so I didn’t get to spend a lot of time with him. Ray J also liked Jamielynn as well.

Christian and Thomas are cute together… They hung out all night for the most part. Thomas was suppose to be taping the party but he was dancing in having fun with baby girl. So I don’t know how much footage he ended up getting of Chris. He has jokes…he was given me a hard time about the first time I met him. We were coming from Pierre Thomas party at Metro so this was around Christmas. We all had to potty and he let all four of us go upstairs to use his bathroom. Anyway, just being a concern friend I gave him the big sister lecture about what he was not going to do with Christian when we leave. So he teased me he said he was a little scared of me. But it’s all love…

Miss Sassy and I was in so much pain I was crazy for thinking that I could wear heels for 14hours. I don’t what was wrong with me. I was just ready to go by 2am, my feet was killin me. We said bye to Poochie he is such a sweetheart. We wanted to kidnap him, and no ladies… he’s not gay. I know a lot of people have been saying that he is…why cuz he’s not gangsta and speak english??? When I told him he we were leaving he got all sad, he wanted Miss Sassy to stay with him. His nickname for Miss Sassy is “Shuntee” and he calls me “B”.

Overall, it was ok…but better when I get out these stiletto’s.

BEHIND THE BEAUTY: Versace Fall 09

written by Brandy Gomez-Duplessis

My favorite Makeup Artist Pat McGrath did it again…she really glammed up the makeup for Versace Ready-To -Wear Fall 2009 fashion show. McGrath mimicked Donatella Versace’s everyday smoky look when she did the makeup on the models. Personally this is my favorite style of makeup; I love it on my clients, on photo shoots and myself. This smoky intense black eye can work well on everybody if done correctly.

McGrath put together shiny black and dark blue powders on the socket and underneath the eye. She accentuated the crease of the eyes with a shimmery pink powder blending it right under the brow bone. To give it that wow factor she applied black false eyelashes. She used black eyeliner very heavily and she also filled in the models brows for definition. On the cheeks she re-used that same shimmery pink powder and a second pale matte pink blush. A liquid pearlized highlighter right above the check bone to help bring focus to eyes. McGrath finished this sexy glamor look with a nude gloss.

I think this may be the look I will wear tonight…with exception of taking the black shadow all the way out to the socket.

BEAUTY SPARK: 70s ‘Greaser’ Look

written by Brandy Gomez-Duplessis

Forget prim and proper, these girls rocked an edgy 70s “greaser” look. Imagine Rizzo on the runway and you will have the look for the new PPQ show. Makeup Artist Sam Bryant for Lancôme and hairstylist David Bailey was inspired by a David Bailey photo of Twiggy. So they created a seventies rock slut look reminiscent of “I just left Studio 54”.

I love that Duffy used lots of hair extensions to add thickness to a side parted hair and created exaggerated plaits which covered the models. Bryant gave the models a dark eye on light glossed skin prepped with Flash Retouched concealer as a foundation. On the lids he primed it with Laque Liner in Pure Black, and blended it with a black eye shadow from an Ombre Absolue Duo compact, and finished with Hypnôse. On the lips he used very lightly-Color Fever Gloss in 212.

Now this is a look that I don’t mind seeing the edgier girls rock. It’s definitely a look that many girls can relate to and execute. Roll out of bed the next morning, throw on some ready to wear couture, and out the door look is what best describes it to me.
